Obituary for Charles M. "Mickey" McBride PhD

Charles Michael “Mickey” McBride, of Waco, passed away Friday, January 29, 2016. He suffered many years with Parkinson’s disease, but his death was swift and unrelated.

Mickey was born in Beaumont, Texas, the second child of Everett Franklin McBride and Lottie Marie Gibbs McBride. He was an honor graduate of South Park High School class of 1958 and a 1962 graduate of Lamar State College of Technology, Beaumont, Texas. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University in 1967. He was preceded in death by his mother and father. In 1968, Mickey was married to Marilynn Naish, the mother of his two sons, Patrick and Michael.

Mickey worked in the offshore oil industry for more than 30 years, managing the design and construction of drillships and semisubmersibles and several deepwater projects. He resided in Singapore, Spain and Nigeria and traveled worldwide during his career. He worked with Reading and Bates, Western Oceanic, Transocean and others before retiring in Houston in 2003.

Mickey’s passions included golf, Rice baseball, reading, blues and bluegrass, fishing, and crossword puzzles.
Survivors left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife, Ida Bridgwater Eastham McBride; sons, Patrick McBride of Austin, Michael McBride of Beijing, China and their mother, Marilynn McBride of Kerrville; brothers, Bill McBride of Houston and Steve McBride of Austin; sisters, Sylvia Goodrich Kehle and husband,Ralph of Austin, Paula McBride Summers and husband, Richard of Houston; his stepsons, Alan Eastham and wife, Stephanie of Corpus Christi, and Robert Eastham and wife, Rose of Robinson. He was loved as well by his granddaughters, Melissa, Emily, Jessica, Ida, Maria and Ileana; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family wishes to express its thanks to Dr. Daniel Keyser and Dr. Sandra Kitson of Scott and White for their guidance during Mickey’s illness and to Barbara of Home Instead, who provided devoted care for more than four years. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to HOTPACS, a local support group for Parkinson’s patients and their caregivers, in his memory. The address is 1257 Drake Court, Waco, TX 76710. A celebration of his life will be held on the beach of the Gulf of Mexico this summer.
