The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Gayland Kapavik can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

Butter and Biscuits

Gayland and I worked at HEB Grocery Store at Southgate.  Friday was the second busiest day of the week and the stockers came in from about 8 PM until 8 AM to replenish the shelves for Saturday.  We both worked on the Dairy Section.  As Gayland stocked the store brand stick butter, his voice sang out mangling the old familiar jingle, “If you think it’s butter, but it’s not – it’s Silver Valley.”

And yes, the biscuits were in the dairy case as well.  Pillsbury would come by and collect the out of date tubes, but we had to police the store brand.  You didn’t need to check the date.  As soon as they were “stale” they tended to explode.  All you had to do was pull the empty tubes and the biscuit dough.  I really don’t know who started the Friday Night Wars.  Probably not Gayland, but he was quite good.  Biscuit dough makes a remarkable missile.  And nothing smacks your neck like cold, damp biscuit dough.

Gayland was on the Sunday mop brigade, too.  On one of those occasions, I unintentionally tried to kill everyone on the mop crew with poisonous gas.  Bleach is a great cleaner.  Ammonia is a great cleaner.  Together, not so much.  Just a poisonous gas that the fire department had to clear out.

Gayland made work a lot more enjoyable than it should have been.  He was a friend and mentor.  He is missed.
