Obituary for Thera Mae Tacker (Bell)

Thera Tacker, 93, of Waco, passed away at St. Catherine’s Center on Thursday, January 7, 2016. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 11, 2016 at OakCrest Funeral Home with Dr. Charles Dixon and Rev. Kip Osborne officiating. Burial will follow at the Mexia City Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd., Waco.

Thera was born in Buffalo, Texas on March 9, 1922 to William and Georgia Bell. She went to Buffalo High School and later took classes at Navarro Junior College. She married Ed Tacker of Mexia on June 6, 1938. Ed passed away in 1992.

Thera worked at the Waco Police Department in the Records Division as a secretary, retiring in 1987. She was a member of Western Heights Baptist Church and the Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading, cooking, especially baking cakes, sewing and spending time with her family and friends.

Thera was predeceased by her parents; her husband; her daughter-in-law, Fay Tacker; her son-in-law, Jay McCullough; sister, Bea Grobaker; brother, Wm. Bell; and cousin, Dollie Bell.

Survivors include daughter, Betty McCullough, of Waco; son, John Tacker, of Wortham; daughter, Cathy Hickman and husband, David, of Waco; beloved niece, Carolyn Shilling and husband, Jimmy, of Waco; grandchildren, Susan Medica and husband, Julio, of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jay McCullough, Jr. and wife, Amanda, of Corona, California, Stephen McCullough and wife, Angela, of Dallas, Tiffany Blackmon and husband, Gregg, of Austin, Jill Ferguson and husband, Kenneth, of Fairfield, Bud Tacker and wife, Jody, of Mexia, Ray Black and wife Catherine, of Houston, David W. Hickman, of Waco, and Michael Hickman, of Melbourne, Florida; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and special nephew, Bob Tacker and wife Cindy of Fort Worth.

The family would like to thank Thera’s friend and caregiver, Helen Martinez, of Waco, the 1st and 4th floor staffs of St. Catherine’s Center for their loving care over the past ten years, Providence Hospice for their tender care during Thera’s last days, and special thanks to Mitchell Parrish, Thera’s Sunday School teacher and deacon, and Rev. Kip Osborne, for visiting and ministering to her for the past ten years.

Memorials may be made to Providence Hospice, Meals on Wheels or Western Heights Baptist Church.
