My mom started cutting my hair for the first years of my life but then I graduated to Mr. Reinhardt’s place. We went there because he was a member of our Lutheran church. Most of the time my mom took me to get a haircut, but then there was that time when dad took me. He gave me a few bucks and sent me in while he waited in the truck.
It was the era of the Beatles and they inspired me to start playing guitar. I didn’t think you could have short hair and play a guitar so I would tell Gene to just trim it up a little. When I got back to the truck dad sent me back in to get more taken off. My dad always thought that if your hair touched any part of your ear it was too long.
I went back in but had to wait until Gene finished with another customer. I told him why dad sent me back in and he understood. Gene had a real gift for listening and understanding people. Maybe that’s why he had so many customers because they got more than a haircut. So he wet his comb and combed through my hair and sent me on my way. It looked a lot shorter and dad was pleased. From that day on I looked forward to getting a haircut.
Gene will be missed, but we’ll see him again in a place called Paradise, because Gene had faith in his Savior who is Jesus Christ. Jesus promised, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”
