Virginia Connaway

Virginia Gummelt Connaway, 87, of Wooway, passed away Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at her residence. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at OakCrest Funeral Home with Rev. Curtis Holland officiating. A private burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.

VirgInIa was born in Mooreville, Texas on July 26, 1926 to Louis and Sadie Henkel Gummelt. She became a Christian and was baptized at Cottonwood Baptist Church at the age of seven. Waco became her home in 1944.

Virginia was married to William Joseph Connaway on February 3, 1945. She worked for American Optical and Zales Jewelers in Waco, and then worked for 43 years with her husband at Connaway's Trim Shop in Waco. Virginia enjoyed traveling with the TIAA Chapter. She enjoyed bowling; she and her husband sponsored bowling teams for many years. She belonged to two 42 clubs, and played cards with the same ladies on Wednesdays for over thirty years.

She worked with the Republican Party of McLennan County, volunteered with Meals on Wheels, and served on the church Bereavement Committee. She was a good cook, and was known for her delicious cakes. Virginia became a member of Western Heights Baptist Church in Waco in August, 1962. There she worked with children until 1993, when she joined the Joy Sunday School Class, and was secretary of the class until her health prevented her from attending. Virginia and Bill entertained the youth of the church at their home every Sunday evening for many years.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill Connaway, and two children, Billie Lucille Connaway and Mickey Sherrill Connaway.

Survivors include son Rick Connaway of Waco, step granddaughter Kristen Dunn and step great-grandson Scott Dunn of Mesa, Arizona; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Charles and Ina Connaway, and nephews Richard Connaway and Robert Connaway and wife Cathy and their children, all of St. Augustine, Fla., and Bruce Connaway and wife, Nancy of Arlington.
