Valera Labit

Valera Evans Davis Labit, 99, died peacefully in her sleep December 12, 2013 at Hillcrest Hospital at 4:08PM, surrounded by family and friends. Services will be held Tuesday, December 17 at 11:30 AM at Richfield Christian Church. Interment will follow at Waco Memorial Park.
Valera was born on September 15, 1914 in Marlin Texas. She was the oldest of four children to Joe and Myrtle (Vann) Evans. She attended Marlin Public Schools where she graduated from Marlin High. After high school, she worked as a waitress at Sontags Cafe in Marlin. She later married Alton Davis, and two years later in 1936 Tommy Joe Davis, their only child, was born in Marlin. After her divorce from Alton, she moved to Waco in 1939/1940 where she lived for the rest of her life. Her first job in Waco was as a
waitress at Leslie's Chicken Shack. Subsequently, she had various jobs before managing the Casa Blanca Supper Club, during and after World War II until 1947 . She owned and operated Val-J's Dress Shop on 25th Street in the early 1950s when she married L.C. (Chester) Labit. Valera was employed as a cashier at Pat Rutherford's Restaurant on LaSalle, and then worked as a receptionist at Cox's and then Goldstein-Migel's Beauty Salons. She ended her career as a sales associate in the women's clothing department at Goldstein's-Later Dunlap's until she retired at the age of 90. After her retirement, she moved from herhome of 55 years on Roselawn Drive to The Stillwell Retirement Residence where she lived until her passing.
Preceding her in death are her parents (Joe and Myrtle Evans), brother Edward Evans of Marlin, husband Chester Labit, daughter-in-law Margaret (Huddleston) Davis of Lorena, and great grand-daughter Margaret Ann Davis of Savannah Georgia.
Valera is survived by her son, Tommy Davis of Lorena; grand-daughter Lesa (Davis) Lawson and husband Jim of Hallsburg; grandsons, Sergeant Major Joe C. Davis and wife Erin of Columbus, Georgia, Richard L. Davis and Roxanne of San Clemente, California; great grand-daughters, Patricia Duffy, Mary Elizabeth Davis; great-grandson,Tommy Lee Davis all of Columbus, Georgia; sister, Mary Jo Shields of Waco; brother, Charles Evans and wife June of Marlin; lifelong friend, Margaret Latimer of Waco; numerous nieces/nephews and dear friends.
