Rev. Thomas L. Wagstaff

We are saddened to share that Reverend Thomas Leroy Wagstaff passed away on January 5, 2026, at age 80. Rev Wagstaff was a cherished spouse, parent, and friend whose warmth, kindness, and unwavering spirit touched the lives of all who knew them.

Born on January 12,1945 in Claremore, Oklahoma, Thomas lived a life full of love, laughter, and purpose. He was known for his generous heart, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need and to offer words of encouragement and support. Thomas's dedication to his family, friends, church, and community was evident in every aspect of his life.

Thomas was raised in Refugio, TX from infant. Following his graduation from high school, he attended Texas A&M University in College Station, TX, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering in 1967. Soon after, Thomas began his professional journey as a Fleet Operating 3rd Assistant Engineer for Lykes Bros Steamship Co. Inc. Through dedication and exceptional technical skill, he advanced rapidly within the company— serving aboard several fleet vessels, including the highly automated “Far East Clipper” type. During his tenure as Chief Engineer, Thomas played a pivotal role in overseeing the implementation of new automation technologies, which improved operational efficiency and safety standards across the fleet. His exemplary job performance was recognized with multiple commendations from company leadership.

After several years as Chief Engineer, Thomas was promoted to Port Engineer at the company’s headquarters in New Orleans, LA. He continued to demonstrate outstanding leadership and was later transferred to Houston, TX, where he further contributed to the organization’s success. Over the course of twenty-eight years of distinguished service with Lykes, Thomas held a U.S. Merchant Mariner Officer’s unlimited horsepower license as Chief Engineer of Steam and Motor vessels. His remarkable career left a lasting impact on colleagues and the maritime industry alike.

In 2004, Thomas was called to fulfill another journey of life. He was ordained into the Office of Public Ministry in The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod and installed as Pastor at Peace Lutheran Church in Rockport, Texas, where he provided spiritual guidance for 15 years. He was loved and respected by his congregation.

Thomas was a man filled with the Holy Spirit, whose excellent character shone through in every aspect of his life. He radiated warmth and compassion, greeting everyone with a genuine smile and a helping hand. Whether volunteering, comforting those in distress with kind words, or supporting his church and community, Thomas consistently exhibited love and grace to all he met, making each person feel deeply valued and cared for.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Roy and Gladys Wagstaff and first wife, Kathleen Butler Wagstaff.

Thomas is survived by his spouse, Rita Wagstaff; children, Nathan Garner, Alan Wagstaff and wife Kesi, Melissa and husband Jimmy, and Tonya and husband Ben; his grandchildren; and his adopted family, the Batts family; as well as countless friends and loved ones.
