Rocky Lee Atwell, 59, of Waco, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, February 3, 2008, after bravely fighting a short battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 6 at 2 p.m. at OakCrest Funeral Home with the Rev. Mickey Fugett officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday, February 5 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd. A memorial video honoring Rocky's life will be shown during the visitation.
Rocky was born March 27, 1948 in Fort Collins, CO and was a graduate of Eastern Hills High School in Ft. Worth. He also attended Tarrant County Jr. College.
Rocky pursued his career as Store Manager for Piggly Wiggly for 20 years. He recently retired from Valero, Inc. after 16 years of employment.
Rocky will be remembered as a devoted family man and hard worker. When he was not working, he loved playing golf and cards with his buddies. He also was an avid sports fan and enjoyed going to Baylor games with his family and friends.
Rocky is preceded in death by his father, Frank "Bud" Atwell, Jr.
He is survived by his loving children: daughter, Jennifer Atwell Walters of Austin and son, Jeffrey Atwell of Lorena; his beloved mother, June Routt of Burlington, WI. ; brothers, Steve Atwell and wife, Cindy of Waco and Rodney Atwell of Temple; and sister, Linda Hughes and husband, Bill of Burlington, WI. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Joseph Atwell of Waco and Tyler Walters of Austin along with many nieces and nephews who loved their "Uncle Rock" very much. Rocky will be greatly missed by all his family, friends and his dog, Stoney.
Pallbearers will be Steve Kincer, Doyle Bood, Mickey Williams, Jim McKethan, Dave Keel and Wiley Oliver. Honorary pallbearers will be John Swanson, Gary Simpson, Johnny Brackeen, Brandon Robinson and Wesley Atwell.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Steve and Cindy Atwell for their great compassionate love and support. The Atwell family would also like to thank the Providence Hospital ICU staff and the Scott & White Continuing Care staff and everyone for all the prayers and support given to the family throughout Rocky's illness.
