Richard Gayle Burney, 86, of Waco, Texas, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2026. He was born on August 6, 1939, and was the son of the late Richard Linzey Burney and Ora Lee Burney.
Richard lived a life defined by dedication, hard work, service, and adventure. He proudly served his country for five years in the United States Army and Army Reserves before beginning a distinguished career in law enforcement with the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office. Over the course of more than 30 years, Richard faithfully served his community until his retirement.
Never one to slow down, Richard later spent over 10 years working in and around the film industry on the production side of movies, television series, and commercials. He was known on set for his strong work ethic, punctuality, and easygoing spirit. Younger crew members would often ask, “How old are you?” amazed by his energy and ability to keep up with the demanding pace of production. Richard especially enjoyed working alongside his daughter, Melissa Gayle Burger, on many productions through the years.
While Richard valued his work, his true passion was horses and trail riding. Alongside his beloved wife, Louise Burney, he traveled across the United States riding horses on trails and back roads, creating memories and friendships everywhere they went. One of his proudest accomplishments came in 2004 when he served as Trail Boss for a historic ride from Bandera, Texas to Dodge City, Kansas, leading more than 300 riders and wagons on a journey lasting over 40 days.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Louise Burney; children, Richard Lee Burney and Melissa Gayle Burger; granddaughters, Linzey Engelhardt, Rebecca Burney, and Abby Gayle Burger; great-granddaughter, Harper Baer; and his sister, Marsha Blanchard.
A visitation will be held at OakCrest Funeral Home in Waco, Texas on Friday, May 8, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at OakCrest Funeral Home. Richard will be laid to rest following the service in Mart, Texas.
Richard will be remembered for his servant’s heart, unwavering work ethic, adventurous spirit, and deep love for his family, friends, horses, and the open trail.
