Raquel Vásquez Zúñiga

Raquel Vásquez Zúñiga, de 93 años, falleció serenamente el 1 de junio de 2026 en Waco, Texas, rodeada de su familia. Aunque lamentamos profundamente su partida, nos reconforta saber que ahora descansa en paz.

Nacida el 12 de enero de 1933 en Las Esperanzas, Río Grande, Zacatecas, México, le precedieron en la muerte sus padres, Epimenio Zúñiga Jiménez y Mariana Chávez, sus hermanos, y su esposo, Leonardo Vásquez Alvarado.

Conocida cariñosamente por muchos como Doña Raquel o La Tía Raquel, y por sus nietos como “Wecho”, fue una mujer de increíble fortaleza y resiliencia, la matriarca de su familia. Tras enviudar a los 37 años, se mudó con su familia a Texas, donde una nueva generación ha echado raíces profundas.

Doña Raquel se ganó un lugar especial en su comunidad gracias a su deliciosa cocina. Si creciste en Waco durante los años 80 y 90 y te encantaba el fútbol, seguramente la recuerdas con su puesto de comida junto a sus hijos en las antiguas canchas de fútbol por la calle 4 y también cerca de Baylor. Allí, su comunidad encontraba un auténtico sabor a hogar en sus aguas frescas caseras, tacos de barbacoa y gorditas únicas, cuyo sabor sigue siendo inigualable. Sus nietos guardan recuerdos de ayudar a sellar las bolsas de churros, picar fruta fresca para las aguas y muchos intentos fallidos de aprender a preparar sus famosas gorditas. Los domingos, su casa era el lugar para disfrutar de menudo casero recién hecho y tortillas gigantes caseras.

Doña Raquel era una persona muy sociable. Su casa siempre estaba llena de familiares y amigos, y las paredes repletas de fotos de todos. Siempre se esforzaba por compartir lo que tenía con los necesitados, razón por la cual muchos la recuerdan con tanto cariño.

En sus últimos años, encontraba alegría en las cosas sencillas: cuidar su jardín, cuidar a sus gatos y acompañar a sus hijas a las reuniones en el Salón de Reino. También era conocida por hojear su libreta de números de teléfono y llamar a amigos y familiares simplemente para platicar.

A Doña Raquel la sobreviven sus siete hijos y sus parejas, sobrinos y sobrinas, y numerosos nietos y bisnietos.

Su legado de fortaleza, generosidad y amor por la familia perdurará en los corazones de quienes deja atrás.

Se celebrará un servicio para conmemorar la vida de Raquel el 9 de junio de 2026, a las 6:00 p. m., en la Funeraria OakCrest, ubicada en 4520 Bosque Blvd., Waco, Texas.

Raquel Vásquez Zúñiga, 93, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026, in Waco, Texas, surrounded by her family. While we deeply mourn her passing, we find comfort in knowing that she now rests in peace.

Born on January 12, 1933 in Las Esperanzas, Río Grande, Zacatecas, Mexico, she was preceded in death by her parents, Epimenio Zúñiga Jimenez and Mariana Chávez, her siblings, and her husband, Leonardo Vásquez Alvarado.

Known affectionately to many as Doña Raquel or Aunt Raquel, and to her grandchildren as “Wecho,” she was a woman of incredible strength and resilience, the matriarch of her family. After being widowed at 37, she moved with her family to Texas, where a new generation has put down deep roots.

Doña Raquel earned a special place in her community thanks to her delicious cooking. If you grew up in Waco during the 80s and 90s and loved soccer, you surely remember her with her food stand alongside her children at the old soccer fields on 4th Street and also near Baylor. There, her community found an authentic taste of home in her homemade aguas frescas, barbacoa tacos, and unique gorditas, whose flavor remains unmatched. Her grandchildren cherish memories of helping seal the churro bags, chopping fresh fruit for the aguas frescas, and many failed attempts to learn how to make her famous gorditas. On Sundays, her house was the place to enjoy freshly made menudo and giant homemade tortillas.

Doña Raquel was a very sociable person. Her house was always full of family and friends, and the walls were covered with photos of everyone. She always made an effort to share what she had with those in need, which is why so many remember her with such affection.

In her later years, she found joy in simple things: tending her garden, caring for her cats, and accompanying her daughters to meetings at the Kingdom Hall. She was also known for flipping through her phone book and calling friends and family simply to chat.

Doña Raquel is survived by her seven children and their partners, nephews and nieces, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her legacy of strength, generosity, and love for family will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.

A memorial service for Raquel will be held on June 9, 2026 at 6:00 pm at OakCrest Funeral Home, located at 4520 Bosque Blvd. Waco, Texas.
