Mildred “Millie” Reid

Mildred was born on August 10, 1925 in Waco, TX and passed away May 5, 2025. Services will be at OakCrest Funeral Home on May 9th. Visitation for family and friends will be from 11am-12pm with the service following at noon. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.

Mildred was born at home in Waco, TX during the depression to Walter and Meta Hommel. Millie graduated from Waco High School in 1942. She married William Texas Reid on Feb 22, 1942. She was a proud Army wife and later that year joined her husband W. T. Reid, who was in the Coast Guard Artillery in the Army stationed in Washington DC. She obtained work for the war effort as a typist in the capital for the American Red Cross. Later during the war her husband was sent to Germany. She returned home to work for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator. In January 1946 her husband returned home and opened an automobile service station called Reid’s Brothers Service Station, located at 25th Street and Bosque. It remained in business for more than 40 years. One daughter and two sons were born, making Mildred a full-time mother. She became a lifetime PTA officer, Campfire Girl’s leader, chauffeur to all the ball games, seamstress, and a birthday party cook for her children and grandchildren. After working 24 years for the Waco ISD school as a secretary, with her love for singing she joined the Baylor Senior Choir, singing with them for 27 years in the 90s. They went to New York City, and she sang at Carnegie Hall. She enjoyed quilting, painting, and working the election in her community. She enjoyed sporting events and loved cooking favorite foods for all her children, grandchildren, and great grandkids on their birthdays and holidays. She loved cooking and baking with her grandkids when they were younger. She was the happiest around those she loved she will be missed by her church family at Grace Temple Baptist Church and friends.

She was preceded in her death by her husband, William T Reid; daughter, Linda Reid; son, Gary Reid; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Reid; son, William T Reid, Jr.; sister, Jo Ann Hopkins in Florida; and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hommel.

She is survived by three grandkids, Kerri Reid Featherston, Kristi Reid, and Aaron Reid; three great grandkids, Randy Hayes and wife Kayla, Isabella Featherston, and Faith Featherston; two great-great grandkids, Rylan Hayes and Kashtyn Hayes; and many special nieces and nephews, as well as first and second cousins throughout Texas and the states.

The family has requested in lieu of flowers to consider making donations to the American Cancer Society or Grace Temple Baptist Church. The family would also like to thank Alamo Hospice and Wesley Woods for the care and love they gave her.
