Michael Sanford Hutson, age 70, was born March 24, 1956, in Longview, Texas, and went home to his Lord and Savior on March 29, 2026, in Austin, Texas.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Sanford Elmer Hutson, Jr. (“Jack”); his brother, Paul Forest Hutson; and his nephew, Stephen J. Singleton.
He is survived by his mother, Juanita Hill Hutson; his sister, Sandra Singleton; many nieces and nephews; his four children; ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Michael lived a life centered on unwavering faith in God. To many, he may have first appeared as a stranger, but he rarely left a conversation without learning a person’s name. Guided by his deep faith, he prayed faithfully for the people he met and touched countless lives through kindness, encouragement, and genuine compassion. He lived as a modern-day disciple of Jesus, sharing love, prayer, and hope with everyone he encountered.
He was a faithful member of First Church of Pearland, where he deeply felt the presence of God during worship. He especially loved singing along to the hymns and cherished the many meaningful friendships he formed within his church family.
Michael loved his children and grandchildren deeply and found his greatest joy in being with them. He treasured time spent visiting with his family, sharing meals, laughter, stories, fishing trips, and simple everyday moments that became memories his family will carry with them always. Being together as a family meant everything to him, and the love he poured into those moments will remain a lasting part of his legacy.
Affectionately known by several nicknames depending on where he was, many called him “Big Mike,” while others knew him as “M&M” (“Muscle Mike”), names that reflected his strong presence, generous heart, and the bold way he lived life with passion and faith. To his grandchildren, he was lovingly known as “Papa Mike,” a name he carried with great pride and joy.
He loved running along the beaches of Galveston, where he found both peace and strength. He also enjoyed a good hot cup of coffee, and simple moments that reflected his appreciation for life’s everyday blessings and the quiet routines he cherished.
One of Michael’s proudest accomplishments, second only to his faith and family, was owning and operating his beloved West End Gym in Galveston, Texas, until his retirement. What began as a small neighborhood gym became a community where members grew into lifelong friends whom he considered family.
Michael’s precious and dearly loved children are Angelia Michelle Glasscock (David Glasscock), Michael Andrew Hutson (Oraphan Hutson), Candace Sharp (Kevin Sharp), and Amanda Kaye Matherne (Yancy Matherne); and his cherished grandchildren: Brett Taylor Glasscock, Eric David Glasscock, Alexis Starr Erickson (Junyor Erickson), Jason Hutson, Tristan Hutson, Tanner Allen Sharp, Mason Alexander Sharp, Tre Matherne (Maggie Matherne), Kayli Matherne Leach (Quinn Leach), and Jace Michael Matherne.
Michael was also blessed with six great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him tremendous pride and joy.
Michael will be remembered for his strong faith, warm heart, deep love for his family, and the lasting impact he made on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His legacy lives on through the lives he strengthened, the prayers he offered, and the love he shared so freely.
Pallbearers: Brett Glasscock, Eric Glasscock, Michael Andrew Hutson, Jason Hutson, Tristan Hutson, and Tanner Sharp.
Honorary Pallbearers: Mason Sharp, Kevin Sharp, David Glasscock, and Yancy Matherne.
