Mayme Lister passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family. Services will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 with a 10:00a.m. Mass at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Church in Waco followed by the burial at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday, April 27, 2026 from 6:00-8:00p.m., with the rosary at 7:00p.m., at OakCrest Funeral Home in Waco. Rev. Joseph F. Geleney, Jr. from St. Mary’s will be officiating the Mass.
Mayme was born in Mt. Calm, Texas on May 28, 1930. She attended St. Mary’s school in West Station, Texas. She also attended 4C Business College. In Waco, Texas she went over the road to sell books to help the family. She met Joe Lister and they were married. In 1953 she had a daughter, Victoria, named after her brother Victor. In 1954 she had her second daughter, Georgette, named after her brother George. They moved back to Waco, and she went to work at the Owens Illinois Glass Plant and basically raised her daughters by herself and put them through Catholic school. She retired after 25 years with the company. That did not slow her down any, she just volunteered more at the church, sang in the choir, volunteered at Caritas, and started a rosary group that donated money of what they made to prisons. On the weekends you would find her and Patsy at the flea market getting donations for their rosaries and selling the tickets for church raffles, as well as many other projects.
She was avidly involved with the Camp Fire Girls Association. She brought her two girls up through the Camp Fire Girls ranks from Blue Birds to the highest level to become Camp Fire leaders of their own. The school year was not the end; she helped run the Day Camp in Cameron Park and Summer Camp at Camp Val Verde. She was a member of the Glass Awareness Committee and helped get the word out about recycling and buying in glass. She also reported about buying glass in a small newspaper. She also coordinated the many Christmas and Easter parties for the glass plant and their families at their clubhouse.
Mayme never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew her. She somehow knew the right thing to say at the right time to bring out the best in people.
Mother also loved music. She sang in the choir and also won several contests through the years. She was a showman. She played the French harp and taught herself to play the guitar. When the family would get together and play guitars and sing, it wouldn’t be long and she would get the harmonica out and get right in there with them.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Lister; parents, Joe and Agnes Jansky; brothers, Ernest (Florence), Ed (Nancy), Victor, and Jerry (Bobbie); sisters, Carol Drake and Marie (Joe); nephews, Junior Jansky, Buddy Jansky, Ruben Burns, and Joe Vince Drake; and niece, Dee Dee.
She is survived by her two daughters, Victoria Rosennbaum and Georgette Reed (James “Jimmy”); brother, George Jansky (Ima Joy); brother-in-law, Ronnie Drake; grandsons, Justin Reed, Mark Cureton (Melissa), and Chris Cureton; great grandchildren, Owen, Connor, and Gavin Cureton, Lexi Reed, and Ariea Cureton; nieces, Betty Jo Kershaw, Mary Jo Kuropata, and Kathy Gorgas; and nephews, George Jr., Jerome Jansky, Bubba Burns, Ronnie Drake, and Terry Drake.
Pallbearers: Justin Reed, Mark Cureton, Chris Cureton, Owen Cureton, Gavin Cureton, Greg Perez, Brian Vonasek, and Shane Graves.
Junior Pallbearer: Connor Cureton.
Honorary pallbearers: Jimmy Reed, George Jansky, and Ronnie Drake.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Providence Hospice for providing excellent care during such a difficult time; to OakCrest Funeral Home for service and guidance; to Father Joe for his service, prayers, blessings, and guidance; to Judy Rosenbaum for her tremendous help; and to each and every one of you who took the time to join with us for our final respects.
