Maggie Marie Matyastik

In Loving Memory of Maggie Marie Schulz Matyastik

Maggie Marie Matyastik went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 21, 2025.

Maggie was born on November 17, 1934, in a farmhouse in the Clarkson community of Milam County, Texas, to her parents Herman Frederick and Ornie Mae Schulz. From a young age, Maggie’s life was filled with music, faith, and service. She began taking piano lessons at the age of seven. When Maggie was 10 years old, she and her father led congregational music and summer revivals throughout the county, a cherished memory that reflected her deep-rooted love for both music and ministry.

A gifted student, Maggie graduated from Yoe High School in Cameron, Texas, at the age of 15. She went on to attend Baylor University, where she worked in the office for the Dean of Students. While at Baylor, she witnessed the devastating 1953 tornado that struck downtown Waco.

On August 25, 1953 Maggie married her high school sweetheart, William E. “Bill” Matyastik. During the Korean Conflict, Maggie supported Bill as a devoted military wife by traveling with him and working on Army bases. After his service, the couple returned to Texas. There, with Maggie’s unwavering academic support, Bill earned his Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from Texas A&M.

The couple spent four years in El Paso, where Bill worked as a field auditor for the IRS, before settling in Waco. Upon moving to Waco, Maggie shared her love of music by teaching piano lessons. In 1969 they established Matyastik Tax Service, a successful tax practice that continues today as a third-generation family business. Maggie’s intelligence, diligence, and grace were instrumental in the business’s success and legacy. For 64 years of marriage, she was the heart of their home and a shining example of a Proverbs 31 woman—faithful, wise, and strong.

Maggie was a faithful and active member of the First Baptist Church of Waco for 61 years. There she accompanied the string quartet on Sunday nights and in the last several years of her life she played “gathering music” before Sunday School. She was a Past Worthy President of Waco Assembly No. 199 Social Order of the Beauceant (SOOB), a member of Dallas Assembly No. 63 SOOB, Past Worthy Matron of McLennan Chapter 269 of the Order of the Easten Star, and a member of Merak Temple 104 Daughter’s of the Nile. Whenever asked, Maggie shared her musical talents in these organizations. She was appointed to serve as Supreme Direct of Music for Supreme Assembly of the SOOB by four different Supreme Worthy Presidents. She was so widely admired that in 2005, at the request of her SOOB Sisters, she recorded a CD of beloved SOOB songs and marches to be used in assemblies that do not have a Director of Music, preserving her beautiful piano playing for generations to come.

Maggie will be remembered for her faith in our Lord Savior Jesus Christ, grace, strength, and the music that flowed so effortlessly from her heart. Her life was a symphony of love, faith, and service—a melody that will echo in the hearts of all who knew her.

The mother of seven children, she is preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Ornie Schulz; brother, Lanier Schulz; husband, Bill Matyastik; daughters, Nita Parsons and Margie Matyastik-Barton; and granddaughters, Erin Baier and Ashlee Marie Spann. She is survived by her children: Margaret Baier; Linda Hutchings and husband Jody; Walter Matyastik and wife Dawn; and Melissa Spann and husband Jon. She also leaves behind 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward her legacy of love and faith.
