Lucille Castillo

On Monday, November 30th, Lucille Hernandez Castillo, 92, passed away. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends.

Lucille was born October 25, 1928 in Fort Smith, Arkansas to Fannie and Agustin Hernandez. She lived in Fayetteville, Arkansas until 1944, then moved to Waco, Texas where she resided until her death. Lucille was active in St. Mary’s and St. Louis Catholic Churches. She served as president of St. Louis School Mother’s Club, St. Louis Women’s Society and St. Veronica’s Circle. She served as treasurer of the Reicher Booster Club, Northern Little League Baseball, and St. Louis Parish Organizations. She also coached softball teams at Lake Air Little League. Lucille survived the tornado in the ALICO building in 1953 where she worked as a key punch operator until starting a family.

Lucille was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 46 years, Tony Castillo; her brother, Gus; and nephew, Stephen Hernandez.

She is survived by her daughters, Marcia Horn and husband, Johnnie and Mary Lou Castillo; her sons, Tony III and wife, Kathy, Richard and wife, Sylvia, John and wife, Deana, and Michael and wife, Amy; sisters, Lupe Inskeep and husband, John and Stevie Maynard and husband, Doyle; 11 grandchildren, Christa and Dustin Waters, Olivia Horn, Tony IV, Adam and Nick Castillo, Amanda Stott, Ashley Fowler, Elizabeth, Gabriella and Paige Castillo; and 9 great-grandchildren, Jordyn, Isabella, Riley Marie Waters, Tony V and Greyson Castillo, Ava and Noah Fowler, and Audrey and Ella Stott. They were her pride and joy.

Lucille’s passions included tennis, which she played until she was in her 80’s, the Texas Rangers (even though her favorite player was Altuve from the Astros), Lady Bear Basketball, poker (biggest bluffer of all time!), and family game nights. She loved reading, watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, doing crossword puzzles and playing Ping Pong (as she was champion at MCC in her late 50’s when she went back to college after her children were born). She made the best spaghetti and meatballs of all time and no one could come close to topping her chocolate sheet cake recipe.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 8th from 6 to 8 pm at OakCrest Funeral Home. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, only 50 individuals will be allowed in the chapel at one time, masks must be worn, and social distancing should be observed.

The Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, December 9 at 9:30 am followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at St. Louis Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Again, masks are required and social distancing should be observed.

Pallbearers include Tony Castillo, Adam Castillo, Nick Castillo, Kenny Stott, David Fowler and Craig Maynard with Dustin Waters serving as an honorary pallbearer.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Reicher Catholic High School or St. Louis Catholic Church.
