John D. Moreno

With a heavy heart we share the passing of our beloved father, John DeLeon Moreno. He peacefully went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, July 30, 2026 leaving behind a void that could never be filled. His passing, which happened just shy of his 91st birthday, has left us with a deep sense of loss and sadness but we are comforted in the assurance that he is completely healed and in the presence of our Heavenly Father.

John DeLeon Moreno was born on August 3, 1935, in Waco, Texas to Remedios and Jesusa Moreno. He graduated from Richfield High School and then continued his education at TSTI, which led to a more than 35-year career as a Medical Laboratory Technician. John tirelessly worked two jobs to provide for his beautiful family. He spent his career at both Hillcrest and Providence hospitals, finally retiring in 2008. He remained active in life, making frequent visits to see his grandchildren and even took a family vacation to the Texas Coast at the age of 88.

John met the love of his life, Martina Moreno in 1978, marrying that same year on May 5th. Together, they created a legacy of faithfulness, love and devotion, raising four wonderful children: John Paul Moreno and his wife, Bobbi Love; Efren Remedios Moreno; Adam Moreno; and Sandra Marie Hedges and her husband, Scott Hedges. John was incredibly blessed with two grandchildren who affectionally call him “Abuelo”, Oliver Thomas Moreno and John Augustus Moreno. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. His unconditional love for his family will be forever cherished.

John came from a large, loving family. He is survived by four sisters: Beatrice Pursley, Guadalupe Contreras, Margarita Contreras, and Sister Rose Moreno. He was preceded in death by brothers, Pete Moreno and Antonio Moreno, as well as his parents, Remedios and Jesusa Moreno.

Pallbearers will be John Paul Moreno, Efren Moreno, Adam Moreno, Scott Hedges, Patrick Contreras, Albert Contreras, Ethan Contreras, and Jesus Rodriguez.

Honorary pallbearers will be Oliver Thomas Moreno, John Augustus Moreno, John Henry Contreras, Jose Moreno, Daniel Moreno, Martin Pursley, Lee Moreno, Justin De La Rosa, and Pete Patterson.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the friends and family that have shared their love and support since John’s passing. We’d also like to thank Bluebonnet Home Care and Hospice for their nurturing and attentive care in his final days. Lastly, we want to thank our church family at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for all their prayers and support, especially Father Benjie.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, August 7, 2026 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waco, Texas. The visitation and rosary will begin at 8:30 am the same morning. Graveside services will follow after the Mass at Holy Cross Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a tree be planted in John’s name instead. Please see the link to the left of the obituary titled “Plant Memorial Trees”.
