McLennan County has lost one of her long-time citizens. Dr. James A. Vick, children's dentist, died Thursday, April 9, 2009, at the age of 79 years. Dr. Vick married Winnie Marie Franklin in 1953 after meeting her at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi where he was stationed.

They were married Sept. 6, 1953 at First Presbyterian Church in Corpus Christi. They had one child, Joseph James (Jimmy) Vick, III, who now resides in Ft. Collins, Colorado, with his wife Patricia. Jimmy Vick practices law in Fort Collins and Greeley, Colorado. Dr. & Mrs. Vick moved to Waco in 1961 and have made Waco their home ever since. They were married 55 years and Winnie Vick preceded Dr. Vick in death on February 4, 2009.

Born in Parker County on October 28, 1929, James A. Vick graduated from Weatherford High School in 1947. In 1951, he graduated with a B.B.A. from his beloved University of Texas at Austin. He was then commissioned as an Ensign, and served in the U.S. Navy as a Supply Corps officer during the Korean War. He loved his country and particularly his native state of Texas. He received an honorable discharge with the rank of Lieutenant.
After active duty service in the U.S. Navy, Jim returned to the University of Texas at Austin to complete his pre-dental course requirements. He then attended the UT dental branch in Houston and received his DDS in 1960. He was a member of the honorary dental society Omicron Kappa Upsilon. After attending dental school, he became interested in pediatric dentistry while on his preceptorship in Corpus Christi, Texas, and enjoyed it more than adult dentistry, so he decided to become a pedodontist. He then moved to Waco, TX with his family in 1961 where he practiced until his retirement on September 30, 1988. He practiced children's dentistry for approximately 28 years.

Literally thousands of children were treated by Dr. Vick in his office on Wooded Acres, and his patients actually looked forward to seeing their dentist and getting a prize after their appointment! With his dry wit and trademark lab coat and tie, he enjoyed teasing the children and felt fortunate to work for people who appreciated his effort. He loved his work and loved the kids. He was often recognized by his young patients, who ran up to greet him when he ate out at a local cafeteria with his family after church.

Jim's great-grandfather, J. J. Vick, came to Parker County in 1885 with his family, which included nine children. Jim's grandfather, James Andrew Vick (1859-1919), married Thursa Jane Wright and they reared 12 children on a farm in the Dicey community, northeast of present Lake Weatherford. Jim's father, Joseph James Vick, II (1895-1944), was the oldest of six boys and served as an infantryman in France during World War I. In 1928 he married Jim's mother, Era Jane Greenfield, one of eight born to Gabe Thomas Greenfield. Dr. Vick was named for his paternal grandfather, and his brother Gabe Thomas Vick, for his maternal grandfather. His brother Gabe precedes him in death in July of 2000. Gabe Vick was a successful and well-respected attorney and former County Judge who practiced in Weatherford, Texas.

Aside from his many travels across the U.S. with his wife, Winnie Vick, Jim loved spending time at his land "Vick's Sticks" near Norse, TX, clearing around the live oaks, planting bluebonnets, building his cabin, building individual steps down to the creek by hand, spending time with his dogs and growing his vegetable garden.

Dr. Vick was a member of the downtown Rotary in Waco for many years. He was recognized as a Goodfellow member of the Texas Dental Association, and was a proud member of the American Academy of Pedodontics since 1969. He enjoyed attending the American Academy of Pedodontics annual conventions each summer until he retired. He served as a Deacon and Ruling Elder in the First Presbyterian Church on Austin Avenue, and served on virtually every church committee. As a charter member of the Waco Gun Club, he shot skeet (all four gauges) competitively with his son Jimmy, and also enjoyed bird hunting. After his retirement, he devoted a lot of his energies to genealogy research and published two bound volumes; one for the Vick's and one for the Greenfield's. He was especially proud to be a member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution by descent from Captain Thomas Truman Greenfield. He also enjoyed playing duplicate and contract bridge with his many friends. Last, but not least, he always enjoyed watching U.T. sports, especially when the Longhorns were winning. Dr. Vick was a proud Texan, who was quick with an "Aggie joke", who loved the outdoors, and his profession as a children's dentist.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Winnie F. Vick; his brother Gabe Thomas Vick, Esq.; his mother, Era Jane Greenfield Vick, and father, Joseph James Vick, II.

Dr. Vick is survived by his son, Joseph James "Jimmy" Vick, Esq. and daughter-in-law, Patricia Burns Vick of Fort Collins, Colorado; granddaughter Shelby C. Vick, a student at the University of Virginia; and grandson, Emmett James Andrew Vick, a student at Colorado State University. Dr. Vick is also survived by three nephews, Tom Vick, Esq. of Weatherford, TX; John Vick of Atlanta, GA; and Mike Vick of California. Dr. Vick also has two beloved first cousins, Winnie Ruth Chastain of Weatherford, TX, and Mary Evelyn Genser of La Mesa, CA, who were like sisters to him.

The Vick family wishes to thank the dedicated staff of Bluebonnet Hospice, Dr. Bradford Willis, and neighbors Margaret Cain and Mary Gresham for their compassion and assistance during these trying times.
