HEWITT, TEXAS — Mr. Gilberto Rufino Dowling, a man of profound strength, dedicated service, and unwavering devotion to his family, passed away at his home in Hewitt, Texas, on August 5, 2026. He was 94 years old.

A Life of Dedicated Service

Born on July 14, 1932, in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Gilberto carried a spirit of resilience and honor throughout his life. He answered the call to serve his country, dedicating 24 honorable years to the United States Army. His military career instilled in him a deep sense of discipline and patriotism that guided his next chapter in public safety.

Following his military retirement, Gilberto continued to protect and serve his community as a metro policeman in Maryland for more than 18 years. Known for his professionalism, integrity, and steady presence, he left an indelible mark on the communities he protected.

Strength, Passion, and Spirit

Beyond his professional achievements, Gilberto was an extraordinary athlete and an avid sports enthusiast. He possessed a fierce competitive spirit and an impressive legacy in the boxing ring, stepping into the ring for over 300 fights and securing 158 victories by knockout.

When he wasn’t boxing, Gilberto found peace and joy casting a line while fishing. On fall weekends, he could always be found supporting his favorite team as a passionate, lifetime fan of the Dallas Cowboys.

Family and Legacy

Above all his titles—soldier, officer, and boxer—Gilberto’s greatest and most cherished role was as a loving father and grandfather. His family was his pride and joy, and the legacy of his strength, love, and guidance will live on through them.

He is survived by his three devoted children, Josephine Dowling, Angella Dowling, and Danyel Dowling, Sr. He is also survived by his eight cherished grandchildren, who brought immense happiness to his life: Mike Wagner, Dominique Jimenez, Imani Dowling, Gilberto "Bolo" Dowling, Heaven Diaz-Dowling, Danyel Dowling, Jr., Brabender Cabreta Dowling, and Gary Colon.

Services and Interment

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Grace Temple Baptist Church, located at 3825 Bosque Blvd, Waco, Texas. The funeral service will begin immediately following the visitation at 11:00 AM.

Interment with military honors will take place on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, located at 11463 State Highway 195, Killeen, Texas.
