Dr. Michael G. Leonard

Michael Gerard Leonard, of Waco, Texas passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, on April 2, 2026. Michael would have celebrated his 98th birthday this month. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Louis Catholic Church in Waco, Texas, on April 14, 2026 at 10:00 am.

Michael was born on April 18, 1928, in Knockainy, Ireland, to Mary Clare and Patrick Leonard. He was educated at Mungret College in Limerick, Ireland, and went on to attend the National University of Ireland in Galway, where he earned his medical degree in 1954. He received his Diploma in Anesthesia from the Royal College of Surgeons in London, England in 1958. Following his move to the United States, he completed a Fellowship through the American College of Anesthesiology and, in 1967, achieved Board Certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Michael enjoyed a long and distinguished career in medicine. He practiced anesthesia in England before being recruited in 1961 to join the anesthesia staff at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas. In 1971, he was appointed Director of Anesthesia at Hillcrest Baptist Hospital in Waco, a position he held with dedication until his retirement in 1994.

A man of deep faith, Michael was a devout Catholic and a longtime member of St. Louis Catholic Church, where he remained active from 1971 until his death.

Michael had a passion for literature, and particularly a love of poetry. He found great joy in the outdoors--enjoying nature, beekeeping, and gardening. In his younger days, he was an avid fly fisherman and hunter. Those who knew Michael knew of his deep love for his homeland, Ireland. He especially cherished his visits to his beloved farm in Ireland, Russellstown, where he created lasting memories with family and friends.

Michael is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Joan; his children, Michael Leonard of Waco, Dr. Patricia McRae and husband Philip of Houston, and Ann Marie Marthens of Dallas; and grandchildren, Catherine, Caroline, and Andrew McRae and Mary, Maggie, and Madeline Marthens. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Michael is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Molly Mae Marthens; his parents; his brothers, Padraig Leonard of Cork, Ireland, and Dr. John Leonard of Orlando, Florida; and his sister, Dr. Ann Leonard of London, England.

The family would like to thank David Tellez for his compassionate care, and Maria and Carlos Leal for their support. They also wish to thank Providence Hospice, especially Chelle, for their kindness, compassion, and guidance.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to be made in Michael’s honor to The Salvation Army or a charity of one’s choice.
