David Warren Hendon

Dr. David Warren Hendon, 78, of Woodway Texas passed away on October 1, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents George Washington Hendon and Grace Hendon of Hiram Georgia and his sister Jean Carson of Powder Springs, Georgia. He is survived by brothers Wilburn Hendon (Francie) of Powder Springs, Georgia, and Wayne Hendon (Amy) of Monroe, Georgia, sisters Laverne Hendon and Sharon Scott (Don) of Hiram, Georgia.

David was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 11, 1947, and attended South Cobb High School in Austell, Georgia. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Vanderbilt University. He received his Masters and PhD from Emory University and began his 43-year career as a Professor in the History Department at Baylor in 1977. At Baylor, David’s teaching and research focused on European history and Holocaust studies. He served as an editor of the Journal of Church and State Studies and directed the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core from 1998 to 2008. He had a true passion for teaching and has had an impact on the lives of many students.

David lived his life in a way that impacted many people in his family, community, church and professional life. We will miss him, but we take comfort knowing he had a positive influence on the people in his life and the greater world.

He loved to travel and had many stories to tell about those travels. Anyone who has spent much time with David likely heard a few of those stories. He also loved spending time in nature and listening to classical music.

David was a devoted member of Lake Shore Baptist Church for 48 years. Ordained as a deacon, he served on several church committees, including personnel, pastoral search, and missions. His church family was an extremely important part of his life.

Even as we grieve in our loss of David, we are assured that he is living in the promise of the Resurrection and God’s perfect peace.

Memorial services will be held at Pine Valley Baptist Church in Hiram, Georgia on October 24th at 3:00 p.m. A second service will be held at Lake Shore Baptist Church in Waco Texas on November 3rd at 2:00 p.m. His remains will be buried next to his parents in Crestlawn Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia.
