Charles V. Matthews, 78, of Waco, passed away Monday, January 11, 2010. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, January 15, 2010 at the OakCrest Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David E. Brown and the Rev. Van Vowell officiating. Burial will follow at Coolidge Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 14 at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.
Charlie was born April 17, 1931 in Delia to John Virgil Matthews and Mary Lola Dowdle Matthews. He served his country during the Korean Conflict in the US Army. He was employed at General Tire for over 38 years in the traffic department and retired in 1987. He spent most of his retirement years as a wood craftsman and enjoyed working many hours in his workshop and exhibiting and selling his crafts.
Charlie was an active member of Grace Temple Baptist Church where he served in many capacities such as deacon, Sunday School teacher, treasurer, chaperone for youth parties and trips, mission trips, VBS, and wherever his services were needed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Paul Winston Matthews.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 37 years, Rosalie Matthews; son, Mike Matthews and wife, Susan; daughter, Debi Smith and husband, David; 3 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; his sister, Imogene Bailey and husband, Don; sister-in-law, Jimmie Sue Holland and husband, John; nieces and nephews, Wendell and Gary Bailey, Cindy Helm, Melanie Bass, Jennifer Swigert, Emily Parkerson, Mary and Roy Birk, Melissa Womack and Misty and Jennifer Blansit.
Pallbearers will be Don Bailey, Ernest Birk, Johnny Blansit, John Holland, Scott Swigert, Richard Bass, Bob Unger and Ken Guenat.
