Obituary for Terry MacGowan Sutcliffe

Terry M. Sutcliffe, 85, traded his earthly life for eternal life on Tuesday, September, 27, 2022. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at Seventh and James Baptist Church at 11:00am.

Terry was born in Glendale, California on May 9, 1937 to Milton W. and Glendolyn Sutcliffe. In 1944 his family moved to Boulder, Colorado, and in 1949 they moved to Waco where he spent the rest of his life. He graduated from Waco High School in 1956. He worked his way through Baylor University, graduating with a BBA in 1967. While in college, dad met and fell in love with Eleanor Virginia “Ginger” Webb. They married on June 9, 1962.

Dad was a very competent salesman and among the places he worked were Hill Printing, Texas Concrete/Gifford Hill, and L.L. Sams Church Furniture, from which he retired.

While working and attending Baylor, Dad served in the U.S. Naval Reserves for 14 years and was honorably discharged in 1970. Music was a very important part of dad’s life. He sang in the high school choir, Waco Civic Chorus, and Singing Seniors. As a committed Christian he also sang in the choirs of First Baptist Church of Waco and Seventh and James Baptist Church.

Terry was a 46-year member of the Waco Founders Lions Club where he was president, secretary for several years, and Lion of the Year in 2005-06. He spent many hours helping at Lions Park, where he was involved in the installation of the train in 1976. He was a great example of Lionism, a true servants-heart. He was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to anyone and anything. He loved to laugh, enjoyed many road trips with his family, loved his grandchildren immensely, didn’t know a stranger and had the best smile.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents and half-sister Ruth Wackes. Looking forward to reuniting with him in the future are his wife of 60 years, Eleanor Virginia “Ginger” Sutcliffe; his daughter Sheila Sutcliffe Freeman (Jason) and grandchildren Madison Grace Freeman and Aaron Michael Freeman of Plano, Texas; son Sean Sutcliffe of Waco; his sister Mary Elizabeth (Don) Ruygrock of Banning, California; brothers Jim Sutcliffe (Jane) of Phoenix, Arizona; Hall Sutcliffe (Joan) of Alamosa, Colorado; and several loving nieces and nephews.

Terry’s family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses and other medical staff at Baylor Scott & White Temple, who went above and beyond in his final weeks of life, and Dr. Phillip W. Vance Jr., DMD, OMS for his care, compassion and determination over the last few years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Seventh and James Baptist Church Children’s Uniform Ministry, and the Texas Lions Camp via the Waco Founders Lion Foundation.
