Obituary for Susan (Suzie) Lee Catchings

Suzie Catchings, age 75, of Frisco, Tx., a former longtime Waco resident, passed away on November 17, 2022, in Plano, Texas. The Graveside Service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 26, at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco, Texas.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 17, at the Shawnee Trail Church of Christ in Frisco Texas.

Suzie was born December 10, 1946, in Dallas and graduated from R. L. Turner High School in Carrolton, Texas in 1965. Suzie always searched for ways to help other people. During her teen years she developed the skill of ventriloquist. She and her pal, Prissy, entertained children at the Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas. Prissy lived up to her name and the children loved her, not realizing that Suzie was actually Prissy.

Suzie met Tom Catchings in 1964 and he was so smitten with her lovely smile, sparkling eyes, and gracious heart that they were married in 1965. They settled in the Waco area where they lived for about 40 years.

Suzie continued expressing her artistic talents by developing painting skills. She entered the Arts & Crafts world and sold her works of art in a shop in Salado. She then began to hone her decorating and found her second passion: she loved to decorate! However, decorating did not distract her from her number one passion: helping children! Suzie spent many years in Hewitt Elementary and Provident Heights Elementary tutoring children to improve their reading and writing skills.

Suzie lived her entire life as a committed follower of her LORD and Savior, Jesus Christ. She and Tom were members of the Crestview Church of Christ in Waco for over 30 years where Suzie was involved in several miniseries throughout the years.

Everything she did during her life was dedicated to God’s glory. She loved her family and modeled excellent character, commitment, loyalty, faith, hospitality, kindness, joy, strength, and perseverance to all who knew her.

Suzie was preceded in death by her parents, G.V and Jean Simpkins; her daughter, Suzanne Motes; and her dearest friend, Donna Malone.

Survivors include her loving husband, Tom Catchings; daughter, Kathy Powell and husband Ezra; grandson, Ryan Motes and his parents, Mark and Jennifer Motes; nephew, Michael Blasé and wife Laura and their sons, Wyatt and Garrison, and host of dear friends who are bonded with Suzie like family.
