Obituary for Peggy Lee & Hugh Kenneth Key

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Hugh Kenneth Key, Sr. and Peggy Lee Key. Hugh passed away on April 12, 2020, and on January 19, 2023, Peggy entered eternal rest. We find peace knowing Hugh was right there waiting for Peggy, and when she was finally called Home, together they went, hand-in-hand, to rest peacefully with the Lord.

Hugh was born in Tennessee to Hugh Anderson and Effie Ray Key. Peggy was born in Indiana to Eldon B. Price and Arvilla Sevina Sutterfield. Hugh eventually moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where he met Peggy. They were just two young school-aged children, but as we would later see, little did they know their love story was just beginning. They later married in August of 1967 and had five children of whom they loved and cared for immensely.

Hugh served honorably as a Sergeant in the United States Army and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. His experience in the Army played a very important role in his life, teaching him the value of discipline, perseverance, and dependability. If Hugh said he was going to do something, he was going to do it. He was a man of his word and could always be counted on. He had a love for Harley Davidson motorcycles, Bob Dylan, and his dog Maxine.

While Hugh served overseas, Peggy raised her five children. Peggy was a nurturing soul who cared for others. She was the most selfless, strong, and resilient person you could ever meet. In her free time, Peggy loved cooking warm meals from scratch, baking the best cakes and biscuits, but most importantly, creating a welcoming home for those she loved most. Everyone wanted to be at “Memaw’s” house, as it was the very best place to be.

Anyone who knew Hugh and Peggy Key knew the most important thing in life was their family. As strong as their love was for one another, the family they built together was their greatest love of all.

Hugh was preceded in death by his father Hugh A. Key, mother Effie Ray Key, and brother Charles Key. Peggy was preceded in death by her father Eldon Price, mother Arvilla Sutterfield, and siblings Bill Price and Sandra Burkhart.

Hugh and Peggy Key are survived by their five children Hugh Kenneth “Pete” Key, Jr., Brenda Kaye Martinez, Michael Carl Key, Anthony Wayne Key, and Regina Louise Key; 23 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
