Obituary for Melinda Reid

Martha “Melinda” Breeding Reid passed away February 17, 2022 after a brief illness. A Celebration of Life will be held at Christ Church Waco, 1008 Jefferson Ave, Waco, TX at 2:00 on March 19, 2022, reception to follow in the parish hall. There will be no visitation or graveside service.

Melinda was born in Abilene, Texas on February 27, 1941, the second child of Winston Lawrence and Dorothy Anne (Thomas) Breeding.

In 1946 the family moved to Fort Worth, Texas. She grew up on the east side, attending Sagamore Hill Elementary, Meadowbrook Middle, and Poly High School. In 1957 she met Gene Reid, an airman stationed at Carswell AFB. They were married on May 16, 1958.

In 1963 they returned to Fort Worth, raising their children in the same area where she had grown up.

After moving to Waco in 2003 she was active in the Central Texas Genealogical Society. Melinda was an active member of a church wherever they lived. Through the years she volunteered with Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, St. Catherine’s, Friends for Life, and the Gathering Place. She firmly believed “faith without works is dead”.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Anne Elizabeth Breeding Colbert Hiatt; her brother, Winston Lawrence Breeding, Jr.; and her husband of 60 years, Gene Reid. She is survived by her daughter, Tracy Reid Mathis of Alvin, TX; and her son, Timothy Jay Reid of Waco, TX. She is also survived by four grandsons and their wives, Phillip and Anna Penneman of Plano, TX, Tim and Laura Reid of Robinson, TX, Michael and Jami Mathis of Friendswood, TX, and Jeffrey and Monique Mathis of Deer Park, TX, and by five great-grandchildren, Treiii Reid, Evie Penneman, Andrew Mathis, Parker Mathis, and Weslyn Mathis, and numerous nephews and nieces, their families, numerous cousins, and many friends.
