Obituary for Harley Newt Smith

Harley Newt Smith, age 77, of Hewitt, passed away late Tuesday night, January 26, 2021 in the comfort of his own home.

Visitation and rosary will be held at 1:00PM on Friday, January 29, at St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption in Waco, followed by the Mass of Christian burial with Rev. Joseph Geleny, Rev. Ed Karasek, and Rev. Timothy Vavarek as celebrants. Private burial service will follow at a later date.

Harley was born August 16, 1943 in Lorenzo, Texas, the son of J.W. and Vera (Wampler) Smith. He was a 1961 graduate of Melrose High School in Melrose, NM. Prior to joining the United States Army in 1964. On August 16, 1969 he was united in marriage to Catherine Bordovsky in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waco. Harley was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in Waco. He was also a member of KJT Society #31 of West, Knights of Columbus #1358 3rd Degree, and Central Texas Fellowship of Catholic Men. He was raised on a ranch and worked with computers most of his life. Harley enjoyed arts & crafts, working with his hands, and more than anything he loved his wife and family.

Harley is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James Smith; his sisters, Linda Malone, Ronda and husband Johnny Holcomb.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 51 years, Cathy Smith; his daughters, Cathy Jo Kraemer and husband Michael, Sandy Kidwell and husband Mike, a son Charles Smith; grandchildren, Amanda and Jonathan Lawson, Heather and Royce Gross, Cody Kraemer, Caitlin Veselka, Gabby Veselka and fiancé Nolan Kaska, Bella Kidwell, and a great-grandson due in April; bonus grandchildren, Ashley, Lance, Torian, Bradley, & Mikey; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers are James Holcomb, Jonathan Holcomb, Royce Gross, Jonathan Lawson, Brent Pavlas, Travis Pavlas, Brent Ewing, and Nolan Kaska.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to RED-C Radio, Holy Cross Cemetery Association, or to the charity of your choice.
