Obituary for Carlota "Carol" Mejia

Carlota Parga Mejia died with her daughters at her side on Tuesday, May 10th at Heritage Oaks in Corsicana.

Carol, as she was known to her friends, was born to Hilario and Petra Parga in Corsicana on October 9th, 1934. A Depression Era child, she left school after completing the 7th grade to pick cotton and help support her family. She continued teaching herself to read and write. Her favorite way of doing so was by reading Louis L’Amour western novels.
She and friends would often attend “the dances” and merriment in the bigger city of Waco which is where she met her future husband, Antonio Mejia. Tony and Carol were married from 1965 until his passing in 2011.

Before marrying and moving to Waco, Carol was a seamstress with the Haggar factory in Corsicana. She often regaled the story of once making pants for President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Once she married Tony, she became a homemaker. She was accomplished at baking and decorating cakes, sewing many clothes for herself and her children, gardening and volunteering for her church.

Tony died in 2011. She was also preceded in death by her parents, infant child Teresa Ann, brothers Ernest Parga, Elias Parga, Johnny Parga and Mike Parga. She is survived by children Valentina Cueto of Corsicana, Mario Mejia and wife Thu of Phoenix and Christy Huffman and husband David of Corsicana. She is also survived by grandchildren Delilah Cueto and Autumn, Zander and Summer Mejia. She also leaves behind sisters Nieves Reyes, Amelia De La Rosa, Lucy Parga and brother Porfirio Parga and wife Ruby all of Southern California.
Visitation will be on Monday from 6-8pm at OakCrest Funeral Home in Waco. Rosary at 7pm. Funeral Mass will be at 10am on Tuesday at St. Francis Catholic Church with burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to one of Carol’s favorite charities: St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Catholic Charities, Friends for Life or the local animal shelter.
