Obituary

On Saturday, December 28, 2019, Candace Elizabeth Maddox Banning of Woodway, Texas, passed away at her home in Austin, Texas.

Candace was born on September 13, 1949, in Waco, Texas, to Jim and Iris Maddox. She attended Waco schools and graduated from Richfield High School in 1967. She received her bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Texas in Austin in 1971, and continued her studies at the graduate level in American Studies and Anthropology at both Baylor and North Texas University. She was an active member of the Historic Waco Foundation and the Altar Guild at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Waco.

Candace was a devoted and loving wife and mother. She married Powell Banning in 1971. She worked at Baylor News and Information Service to support Powell as he completed his juris doctor from Baylor Law School in 1975, in Waco, Texas. The couple had two daughters together, Elizabeth Lynn, born in Houston, and Megan Alexis, born in England.

Candace had a passion for travel, and when she and Powell lived overseas in England she loved planning trips all over Europe. She enjoyed the mountains of Colorado and the beautiful beaches of Texas and Florida, enthusiastically taking her family on countless adventures. A voracious reader and gifted writer, Candace authored many travel journals detailing her family’s journeys throughout the world. She enjoyed gardening, playing tennis and gourmet cooking.

Candace will be remembered for her quick wit, passion for life, intelligence, and service to others.

Candace was preceded in death by her father, James Alford Maddox; mother, Iris Swales Maddox; and husband, Frank Powell Banning.

She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Banning Malloy and Megan Flores; son-in-law, Jaime Flores; grandchildren, James Flores and Roberto Flores; two sisters, Susan VanVoorhis and Rosemary Bradford; brother-in-law, Jim Bradford; nieces, Melissa Muise and Adrienne Bradford; and nephews, Joe VanVoorhis and Adam Bradford. She loved her family, especially her grandbabies.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 10, 2020, at OakCrest Funeral Home in Waco, followed by a funeral procession to Bosqueville Cemetery.

Candace was a kind soul. She loved her family and showed it in her smile. Although I did not know her for very long she made an impact in my life and the life of all my family especially my sons Jaime and Javier. We will always remember her fondly and may she Rest In Peace
