Obituary for Barbara Joan McCorkle (Hurlbert)

Barbara “Joan” (Hurlbert) McCorkle of Waco, Texas went to be with the Lord November 13, 2020 at Providence Park, St. Catherine’s Center, surrounded by her family and their wonderful staff members.

A private graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday, November 18 at Rosemound Cemetery with the Bishop Ryan Young officiating.

Barbara was born May 16, 1935 in Pleasant View Township, Kansas, one of 12 children of the late William and Clara Hurlbert. She graduated high school in May of 1954 and married Leslie McCorkle on June 25, 1954. They were married for 60 years until his death in 2014. She was a homemaker most of her life, devoted to her children and grandchildren. She was also very dedicated to her genealogy work through the Church of Latter Day Saints. Barbara loved to sew and cook. She and Leslie enjoyed traveling, visiting family, and making crafts together. They moved to Texas in 1964, settling in Boerne for many years and San Antonio until retirement in 1990. They then moved to Waco in 1991 to live out their retirement years.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie McCorkle and siblings, Rolla, Carl, Lawrence, Roscoe and Gary Hurlbert, Pauline Smith, Bessie Mizner and Cora Ulmer.

She is survived by her children, James McCorkle and wife, Cindy of Boerne and Sue Jones and husband, Steve of Waco; grandchildren, Michael Jones and wife, Leila of Waco, Brian Jones of Waco, and Jacy Wiggins and husband, Tristan of Boerne; great grandchild, Michael Joseph Jones of Waco; as well as her brothers, Gordon and Cecil Hurlbert.
