James J. "Jim" Markovitz passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 2, at the OakCrest Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Arthur officiating. Burial with Masonic and military honors will follow at Waco Memorial Park. The visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.

Jim was born May 28, 1919 in Milberry, Mass. At the age of two he was adopted by Louis and Margaret Seguin Markovitz in N. Tonawanda, N.Y. He graduated from North Tonawanda High School, and later attended University of Buffalo, New York.

He was a member of N. York National Guard, U.S. Army 838 artillery air craft, discharged from Camp Buttner Veterans hospital in N. Carolina. Jim was district manager of John Hancock Life Insurance Co. in Dallas, Tx. He founded the Markovitz Insurance Co. in March 1950 and established many friends in Waco during those 38 years. He never failed to pay his respects to his former customers who had passed away.

Jim was past president of Waco Association of Insurance Agents, past commander and life member of James Edmond Post 121 American Legion, Life member of Disabled American Veterans A. G. Lawrence Post #3, Past President, Life member and member of Hall of Fame, Waco Mens Bowling Association, member and past president of 40 and 8 American Legion.

He was a member of Texas Association of Single Adults where he met the love of his life, Lila L. Nehring. He was a member of Waco Masonic Lodge # 92 since 1950, Gurley Lodge #337, York Rite, Karem Shrine Temple over 50 years, and past president of Shriners Parade staff. Jim was a member of First United Methodist Church Wesleyan Workers Class.

He married Yvonne Ramsey July 19, 1946, and later married Lila L. Nehring on Jan. 25, 1992.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Markovitz.

Survivors include his loving wife, Lila L. Markovitz; daughter, Margaret Jean Howard and husband, Judge Eddie Howard of San Angelo; granddaughter, Crystal Dawn Steely; grandson, Kyle Howard; step-daughter, Patricia Pinter Brown and husband Orborn "Salty" Brown, III of Woodway; two great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; two step granddaughters; one step great-grandson; and one step great-granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to Shriner's Hospital For Children.
