Ray was born May 17, 1945 to Raymond ("Pie") and Mary ("Mollie") Schumann in Kansas City, Missouri. He was raised in New Braunfels and graduated high school as valedictorian in 1963.

Ray attended Baylor University until enlisting with the United States Navy in 1966 and serving in the Vietnam War. Among his duties thereafter were mobile mine countermeasures, fleet combat training, and fleet area control and surveillance, and he served on the USS Virginia and the USS Seattle, among other vessels. He received several significant awards, including the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, and the Navy Good Conduct Medal with Four Stars.

Upon his retirement from the Navy in 1988 as Master Chief Operations Specialist, Ray settled in Waco and returned to Baylor, completing his bachelor's degree with a triple major at the College of Arts and Sciences. He was an avid fan of Baylor sports, particularly football and women's basketball, attending as many games as he could.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jim. He is survived by his brother John Schumann and wife Holly of Arlington, Virginia, and several nephews, nieces, and cousins.

The family thanks the excellent physicians and staff at the ICU of Providence Hospital and Providence Hospice Place for the care given to Ray in his final days.
