Obituary for Jane Ellen Brown Ilbery

Jane Ellen Ilbery
July 25, 1918 – October 18, 2013

Jane Ellen Brown Ilbery went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 18, 2013 with her loved ones at her side. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, at OakCrest Funeral Home with the Rev. Stephen Ramsdell officiating. A rendition of “He” will be sung by Crystal Mattiza, granddaughter-in-law. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.

Jane was born on July 25, 1918 in Temple, TX to Jessie Rose (Woodall) and William Carpenter Brown. She was the youngest of eight children. Jane attended West Jr. High School and Waco High. One of her treasured memories was when she danced in the 1929 Cotton Palace Pageant. Later, she attended Southern Bible College in Houston (now known as Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, TX) where she met the love of her life on a stretcher at church, Gilbert A. Ilbery. Gilbert had been stricken with polio and was a paraplegic. She dedicated her life to her family and took care of Gilbert until his passing in June 2000. In their early years, she and Gilbert had a gospel radio show, Midnight Gospel Hour, in Houston on which they sang and ministered the gospel of Jesus Christ. She and Gilbert both played the organ and were members of a Waco Organ Club. For several years they owned Ilbery’s Record Shop in Waco’s Fairgate Shopping Center.

A favorite pastime for her and Gilbert was sailing and received a sail boat as a wedding gift. This love of the water remained forever with lots of time spent on the Texas coast in Palacios and Port Aransas.

For those who knew her, witnessed her creative talent. She would make art out of anything she saw…gum wrappers became stem glasses, old twine became bowl covers, old artificial flowers turned to fairies, newspapers to sculptured art, material and bandanas into beautiful necklaces. She made paper mache statues

of Santa’s elves that won first place in the City of Waco’s Christmas decorating contest. Her creations adorned parade floats, banquet head tables, as well as her own yard at Christmas.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Gilbert; her parents, siblings Edith Lindemann, Margarite Clawson, Jessie Lee Nicodemus, Dub Brown, MaryBelle Mills, Joe Dee Brown and Elizabeth Burchart; son-in-law, Mickie Mattiza; grandson-in-law, Tommy Holden; great-granddaughter, Meagan Wood.

Her memory lives in those surviving her…Jan and husband, Gaylon Wood of China Spring; Judy Wallace of Waco; Jo Ann Mattiza of Waco and Jeannine Ilbery of Blum. Grandchildren: Richard and Kim Wallace of Temple; Greg and Debbie Korioth of Saginaw, Chris and Tammy Mattiza of Gatesville, Julie and Neil Fruge’ of College Station, Justin and Crystal Mattiza of Fritch, Brian Wood of Waco and Tracy and Gene Pickens of Midland; 17 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and special friend, Linda Holden and thanks to all the wonderful staff at Hillcrest Hospice.
