Sept. 7 1940 - March 7, 2015

Walter Thomas Eslinger,74, of Woodway, TX, left this world on his and God’s terms on Saturday evening, March 7, 2015, surrounded by his wife and children following a brief battle with Cancer.
The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, March 11, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m., at the Crestview Church of Christ Community Center in Waco. A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, at Oakcrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.

Eslinger was born in The Dalles, OR, on September 7, 1940, to Walter A. and Lois Eslinger.He graduated in 1958 from Astoria High School in Astoria, OR.Eslinger followed his father’s lead enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1959. He spent 22 years in the Navy retiring in 1981 as a Senior Chief.Eslinger met the love of his life, Brenda, while stationed in Memphis in 1962. They wed in 1964 and would have been married for 51 years in May 2015. The couple had two children, Scott, of Beaumont, TX, and Stephanie, of Robinson, TX. Following his retirement from the Navy he completed his bachelor’s degree in accounting at San Diego State University and spent the remainder of his working life in the defense contracting industry retiring from Raytheon in Waco, TX, in 2001.

Eslinger was a lifelong servant of God and his fellow man. He spent many years as a deacon and then as an elder at Canyon View Church of Christ in San Diego, CA. In Waco he became deeply involved with his new church family at Crestview Church of Christ where he eventually became the facilities manager for the church.

At the urging of a friend he became deeply involved as a prison volunteer in the Texas Department of Corrections in Gatesville. He also spent time volunteering with his wife for Meals & Wheels.
Eslinger loved the outdoors taking many trips camping and backpacking in California with his family and friends. He especially loved spending time in Yosemite National Park with his friend Mike Trammel. He was a lifelong fisherman and loved to fish around the Waco area with his grandchildren.

Eslinger is preceded in death by his parents, Walter A and Lois Eslinger and his brother Jim.

He is survived by his wife Brenda, children Scott Eslinger and Stephanie Lougheed, son-in-law, Freddie Lougheed, grandchildren, Ian Eslinger, Madeline, Morgan and Meredith Parker and Trystan Lougheed.

The family wishes to extend their sincerest thanks to the staff of St. Catherine Center rehab hospital especially his physical therapist, Rachel Neathery and occupational therapist Angela Mikeska and ALL of the nurses and CNAs who took such wonderful care of him for the past three months. They would also like to thank the wonderful staff of Providence Place Hospice for caring for him and his family in his last few days.

Memorial donations may be made in Eslinger’s name to Meals & Wheels or the American Cancer Society.
